Although better known in her later career for her supporting roles in sitcoms like All in the Family (she played Archie’s liberal neighbor Irene Lorenzo) and Laverne & Shirley (she was the girls’ landlady, Edna Babish), actress/comedian/singer/dancer Betty Garrett had a notable, if brief, big-screen stint in which she played other scene-stealing supporting characters. Celebrating what would have been Garrett’s 105th birthday (she was born May 23, 1919, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and died Feb. 12, 2011, in Los Angeles at age 91), Turner Classic Movies airs the first five of the seven feature-length films in which Garrett appeared from the late 1940s and into the late ’50s. Up first is her debut movie: Big City (1948), described on its movie poster as being a “big-hearted drama with songs” in which Garrett plays singer “Shoo Shoo” Grady. Next is the musical romantic comedy Neptune’s Daughter (1949), which finds Garrett playing the similarly named character Betty Barrett, the “man-crazy” sister of star Esther Williams’ character, Eve Barrett. Then, in the musical On the Town (1949), Garrett appears as Brunhilde “Hildy” Esterhazy, who takes to sailor-on-leave Chip (Frank Sinatra). Garrett and Sinatra also factor in the next musical, Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), in which Garrett’s Shirley Delwyn becomes an ardent fan of Sinatra’s ballplayer Dennis Ryan. Finally, Garrett appears in Words and Music (1948), a biographical musical film loosely based on the creative partnership between composer Richard Rodgers (Tom Drake) and lyricist Lorenz Hart (Mickey Rooney).

Starting this evening and continuing into the early morning of Tuesday, May 28, Turner Classic Movies celebrates Memorial Day with a nonstop lineup of war- and military-themed films. This evening’s schedule begins with The Caine Mutiny (1954), the Best Picture Oscar-nominated military trial drama that earned Humphrey Bogart a Best Actor nomination for his memorable performance as Lt. Cmdr. Queeg. After that is Platoon (1986), Best Director winner Oliver Stone’s Best Picture-winning Vietnam War drama, led by Charlie Sheen and Best Supporting Actor nominees Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe. Next in the lineup are two Korean War-set films: director Anthony Mann’s Men in War (1957), starring Robert Ryan and Aldo Ray, and writer/director Samuel Fuller’s The Steel Helmet (1951), the first American film about the Korean conflict. After that is the World War II movie Go for Broke! (1951), a dramatization of the real-life 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which was made up of Nisei (second-generation Americans born of Japanese parents) soldiers. The film is led by Van Johnson and costars several actual veterans of the 442nd. Concluding tonight’s lineup of films and leading into tomorrow’s is the Best Picture-nominated comedy/drama The Human Comedy (1943), which earned star Mickey Rooney a Best Actor nod.

Cesar Millan: Better Human Better Dog: “Lighter Love”

Cesar departs from his normal rehab case to take on an obese pit mix named Moose, who bears a striking resemblance in appearance and spirit to his late pit bull, Daddy. In another case, Remy is a territorial miniature poodle whose incessant barking dominates her pet parent’s balcony. Cesar finds a way to calm the perfectionist pet parent and help reclaim the balcony.

During the infamous Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Pershing lays out one of the most ambitious battle plans ever attempted. To the surprise of many, the U.S. military and key regiments known as the Big Red One and the Harlem Hellfighters help pave the way to a hard-fought victory.

Jason and the Argonauts

Catch a Classic!
Legendary stop-motion special effects master Ray Harryhausen achieved what is probably his greatest triumph in terms of bringing the fantastical to thrilling life in this 1963 feature based on the ancient Greek tale about the hero Jason (Todd Armstrong), who leads the men of his ship the Argo in a quest to find the fabled Golden Fleece. The human characters and actors here are fairly “meh”; the gods, played by actors like Niall MacGinnis as Zeus and Honor Blackman as Hera, are more interesting and fun. But the real stars of the film are the various Harryhausen-created monsters that Jason and crew encounter and battle along the way in a series of spectacular set pieces that are still pretty thrilling to watch today. There are harpies; the multi-headed Hydra that guards the Fleece; Talos, the enormous, sword-wielding bronze statue that springs to life to pursue the men; and, of course, the iconic skeleton army, born from the teeth of the slain Hydra, that fights the Argonauts in an amazing, climactic battle that took Harryhausen and his team four months of painstaking attention to detail to pull off. All of the fantasy action is set to a rousing musical score by Bernard Herrmann.

The classic newsroom-set 1928 Broadway comedy The Front Page has been remade directly, or inspired similar stories, for the movie screen a number of times since the curtain raised on its first performance. Turner Classic Movies is airing all of those film adaptations this evening. First is The Front Page (1974), the second production specifically remaking the stage story basically as it was. Billy Wilder cowrote (with I.A.L. Diamond) and directed the film, which is led by Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Susan Sarandon. Following that is the first direct adaptation, 1931’s Best Picture Oscar-nominated The Front Page, directed by Best Director nominee Lewis Milestone, and starring Best Actor nominee Adolphe Menjou, Pat O’Brien and Mary Brian. Next is the screwball comedy classic His Girl Friday (1940), which adds a romantic element and a gender-switch to the tale. Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy lead the cast of director Howard Hawks’ film. Finally, Switching Channels (1988), making its TCM premiere, remakes both the 1931 Front Page and His Girl Friday, while switching its setting from a newspaper office to a TV newsroom. Acting icon Billy Dee Williams, still cool as ever at age 87, drops by Turner Classic Movies tonight to introduce a couple of his favorite films. First up is The Public Enemy, the legendary 1931 gangster movie that established James Cagney as a star (and led to his frequent association with that kind of role even to this day). The second of Williams’ picks is one featuring the actor in one of his most famous roles: the 1971 TV movie Brian’s Song, based on the real-life friendship between cancer-stricken Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo (James Caan) and his teammate, Gale Sayers (Williams). Both Williams and Caan received Emmy nominations for their performances. Following that are two other Williams-led films, both making their TCM premieres. First, the sports comedy The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) follows a team of ex-Negro League baseball stars in the late 1930s who leave their teams and travel the Midwest as free agent players. Williams leads the cast as Bingo Long, with costars including James Earl Jones and Richard Pryor. Then, in the 1977 biopic Scott Joplin, Williams portrays the iconic ragtime composer and pianist of the title. The cast also includes Clifton Davis, Margaret Avery, Godfrey Cambridge and Art Carney. Eubie Blake, another famed composer/pianist and a contemporary of Joplin’s, has a cameo appearance as a piano contest judge.

More than 50 participants — including her sisters, close family and friends — are taking part in the docuseries, which includes exclusive archival video and unprecedented family access. “We are here to vindicate her. Don’t get in our way,” says one woman in the documentary.
