5 - 11 February is Tinnitus Awareness Week. What is Tinnitus? Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a sound when there is no external source for that soundWhat does tinnitus sound like?Tinnitus is unique to the person experiencing it. But ultimately it isthe sensation of hearing a sound when there is no external source for that sound. Someone with tinnitus may hear ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling or other noises. Tinnitus can be there all the time or come and go. The volume of someone’s tinnitus can vary from one episode to the next. My StoryTinnitus came out of no-where and after a consultation with the ENT team, I was told there is no cure, my hearing is fine (sometimes people with tinnitus go deaf), and I was given an app to download sounds which drowns out the tinnitus. For me, tinnitus is a constant loud static sound, sometimes I have the sound of someone sawing wood! The frequency and intensity varies from day to day and sometimes it can be very distracting, it makes it hard to concentrate on my work and going to sleep in a quiet room is the worst. There is only one charity that can help - https://tinnitus.org.uk/ and if you need more information about tinnitus, they have some great video's. #hiddendisability #tinnitus

Hearing aids make a real difference in improving social interaction for people dealing with hearing loss. They work by making sounds clearer and more distinct, allowing users to fully engage in conversations, join gatherings, and participate in social activities. This boost in auditory perception goes a long way in breaking down communication barriers, creating a stronger sense of connection and engagement. At Help America Hear, we recognize the transformative impact that hearing aids can have on an individual's life. We also understand that many individuals may have hearing aids they no longer use. Did you know that by donating your used hearing aid, you can make a difference in someone else's life?Click the link below to learn more 👇helpamericahear.org/bio#HelpAmericaHear #LongIsland #hearingloss #hearinglossawareness #hearing #hearingimpaired #deafcommunity

Exciting Collaboration Alert! Researchers from the University of Manchester, Aston University, and Lancaster University are joining forces to explore the core needs of deaf children. This ground-breaking project, supported by the National Deaf Children's Society, the University of Manchester, and PF Charitable Trust, aims to delve deep into the experiences of those affected by childhood deafness and hearing loss. Seeking insights from across the UK, the team is not just focusing on individuals with personal experience but also consulting professionals like Audiologists, Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, and more. This #DeafAwarenessWeek, we're proud to celebrate the incredible work of the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS), the leading charity for deaf children. We've had the privilege of working with NDCS since December 2018 by managing their online community outside of regular business hours. This ensures prompt responses, addresses concerns, and keeps the community thriving. But the impact goes far beyond simply maintaining an online presence. Social media has become a powerful tool for NDCS to:🤳 Engage 24/7: Questions are answered promptly, fostering trust and a sense of constant support for parents.🫂 Build Relationships: Social media bridges the gap for parents of deaf children, a community that often lacks readily available resources.🗨️ Create a Safe Space: A supportive online community allows parents to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other.NDCS uses social media creatively too! They promote news, highlight parliamentary campaigns, and feature a heartwarming "Superstar Saturday" where parents celebrate their children's milestones. We're also excited to share their amazing resource – a FREE app specifically designed for parents of deaf children. 👉 To download visit: https://lnkd.in/eeca9dWs

A Message from JenniferExecutive Director, Thrive Together TodayTo Our Community and Friends, It’s July, which means it’s Thrive Together Today’s 23rd birthday — and also the 33rd birthday of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). When the ADA was passed on July 26, 1990, it was a watershed moment in history. It helped pave the way for so many things, including the founding of what is now Thrive Together Today. Even so, there continues to be much work to do. We continue to fight for our rights, and we continue to provide training and education to so many individuals and groups across the state. It is now my 16th year of leading Thrive. In 2007, when I came onboard, I was the only employee for what was then Deaf Iowans Against Abuse. In 2023, we have five employees along with many volunteers, and we served over 700 survivors and their families last year alone! In addition, we changed our name to Thrive Together to ensure we were inclusive, forward-looking and representative of the work that one person cannot do alone. While our $250,000 in grant funding may seem like a significant amount of money, it’s not sufficient for the sheer number of people we serve, which amounts to nearly 500,000 individuals with hearing loss in the state along with hundreds of first responders, state agencies, the judicial system, the legal system, healthcare facilities and providers, and so much more. Even with the amazing work, support, and goals Thrive has, we have so much work to do. That’s where you come in.Any financial or in-kind donation you can provide is deeply appreciated and will help Thrive continue its services and programs for the communities we serve for the next 20 years — and beyond. To donate, there are two options: through our website or you may send us a check directly to our address. Our website: https://lnkd.in/gHXcPXdWOur Address: Thrive Together Today 1660 42nd St. NE Suite R Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, together, we can do so much.” This is our slogan, and we invite you to help us help the community. Together, let’s fight for deaf and hard of hearing people’s rights. Together, let’s uplift each of our communities. Together, let’s make sure our communities thrive together. All my Best, Jennifer#funding #deafsurvivors #thrivetogethertoday

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Through our 5th grant opportunity last month, we got a lot of new followers --- HELLO y’all! We thought we’d take a minute to introduce ourselves again to the world. Meet Sasha Ponappa, the Executive Director of Deaf Organizations Fund.Sasha works with the DOF board, builds donor relationships, and acts as organization liaison, directly supporting countless deaf-centric nonprofits across the country!Missing from this video but key to her everyday life: Sasha’s wild children, kind and gentle co*ckapoo, and her love for the NY Yankees. And here’s her favorite recipe: https://lnkd.in/ewCWkxYmStay tuned for our next spotlight coming on Wednesday! DM us for full transcript and description. Condensed Access Information: Sasha Ponappa (she/her), DOF’s executive director, is a brown woman wearing a black top. Sasha answers 3 questions in ASL: (Q) What nonprofit organization has made an impact on your life? (A) The nonprofit organization that made a significant impact on me is the first deaf nonprofit I used to work for. The organization provided domestic violence (DV) and sexual assault (SA) services for our local deaf community. I enjoyed being able to provide outreach and education to deaf youth directly in ASL about healthy relationships and consent. I wish I had something like that when growing up access to services and information in ASL, my native language. (Q) What’s one of your vices? (A) Chili lime-flavored mango, and can be dried or fresh mango. It is soooo good! You must try it if you haven’t yet!(Q) What’s your favorite meal to make? (A) I kiss-fist that my team thinks I can cook and every week they exchange recipes that I have zero ability to participate in because it's not my thing. But I do have to feed my family. One recipe that we love is Enchilada Quinoa and what’s neat about this dish is you can make it all in one pot. It is so good, especially topped with a lot of cheese and spices. Yes, I’m in... I just need someone else to cook it for me.

In the realm of autism advocacy, there exists a remarkable group that often goes unnoticed: self-advocates.
