Sancho’s strange journey from Man Utd flop to potential Champions League hero (2024)

There has been near-constant speculation over Jadon Sancho's long-term future since returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.

A feud with United boss Erik ten Hag saw Sancho's first-team involvement diminish and he was forced to secure first-team football away from Old Trafford. The 24-year-old returned to his former club as a result, and is expected to be involved in their Champions League final against Real Madrid on Saturday night.

Under contract until 2026, Sancho's future will be discussed again upon his return to the club. Whether he stays at Old Trafford could depend on whether Ten Hag will remain in charge. The Dutchman's future is also up in the air as there is a chance that Sir Jim Ratcliffe could make a change ahead of next season.

With that said, MEN Sport has taken a look at the latest news surrounding Sancho.

The path to Germany

Sancho began his youth career at Watford at the age of seven. He was then picked up by Manchester City in 2015 but didn't make an appearance for the first-team before leaving to join Dortmund in 2017, aged just 17.

He initially started playing for Dortmund's B team and a year later, he made his debut in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg. After four years and 157 appearances under his belt, he made the switch to Old Trafford for a £73million fee.

Struggles at United

Ten Hag and Sancho had a public falling out and it was claimed that the Dutch boss encountered 'issues' with the winger, who was signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

He was subsequently banished from the first-team and joined Dortmund in January for the remainder of the season. The Bundesliga outfit had their own discipline issues with Sancho during his first stint in the club and he had been known to be late to training at Carrington during his time with United.

Explaining the situation, Ten Hag told Sky Sports at the time: "He's now at Dortmund. So after he was signed, one year before [I was here], and there were issues. We have had issues all the way through, and so you can make out his stay at Manchester United so far is not a success."

Asked if an apology from Sancho would have solved the situation, Ten Hag added: "We have said that before and I don't want every time to return to the point. He knows what he should do and we have made that clear.

"It was also so clear and obvious about his performance so let's stop this discussion. He is at Dortmund and we wish him the best of luck."

Renaissance at Borussia Dortmund

The England international has rediscovered his form at Signal Iduna Park, starting in 11 out of the 16 Bundesliga games he played in. Sancho has also started in all six Champions League games and could be set for another start in the final at Wembley.

Dortmund boss Edin Terzic says he was not surprised by his qualities, as he became a key player for his team. "It's maybe not so easy to bring it onto the field, especially when you haven't had rhythm for a while," Terzic said.

"We know his quality and we saw it again today. We knew we needed a performance like that from Jadon. I think that big games are decided by big players and tomorrow, he will have the opportunity to decide it.

"We are really happy with him. From all sides we are happy to have him in our team. I think you can feel that he is happy to be with us."

Will United sell him?

Sancho's £73m signing on a five-year deal created an amortised cost in the club's annual financial accounts. However, United may likely need a sizeable fee to encourage them to sell and will want to recoup as much as possible.

Ten Hag believes Sancho's improved form in Germany 'shows he represents a high value for United, which is good.' The Daily Mail add that Dortmund's presence in the Champions League final has triggered significant bonuses in his loan deal.
