Smoke Description

Descriptive text narrative for smoke/dust observed in satelite imagery through May 22, 2024, 4:01 a.m.

SMOKE:
Canada and the North Atlantic Ocean - Numerous wildfires located throughout portions of Canada from the western Northwest Territories and northeast British Columbia to the central regions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba continued to burn despite being concealed by persistent cloud cover throughout the day. Due to the large amount of ongoing wildfires and recently developed ones throughout these areas, a large area of smoke ranging from light to localized moderate density covered a majority of Canada, extending from the the Yukon and northeast British Columbia across much of Canada and regions near the North Pole and then across much of the North Atlantic Ocean to just off the coast of western Europe.

Central and Eastern United States - An area of light density smoke was seen over portions of the Upper Midwest of the United States where it merged with the Canadian smoke and was also extending southwest into portions of the South Central United States where it also merged with the large area of Mexican and Central American smoke. This area of smoke continues east covering most of the eastern U.S. and

Arizona - An plume of light to moderate density smoke, from a fire over north-central Arizona was extending from north-central Arizona northeast remaining in the state as evening approached.

FAQs

How bad is wildfire smoke for your lungs? ›

Studies show that some people exposed to heavy smoke have temporary changes in lung function that makes breathing more difficult. People can also have changes in heart function. Carbon monoxide and small particles are two common substances in smoke responsible for these health effects.

What is the difference between a wildfire and a prescribed fire? ›

A prescribed fire is a planned fire intentionally ignited by park managers to meet management objectives. A wildfire is an unplanned fire caused by lightning or other natural causes, by accidental (or arson-caused) human ignitions, or by an escaped prescribed fire.

How toxic is wildfire smoke? ›

Once inhaled, these particles can affect the lungs and heart and cause serious health effects. Larger particles (> 10 µm in diameter) are generally of less concern because they usually do not enter the lungs; however, they can still irritate the eyes, nose, and throat.

How do you detox your lungs from wildfire smoke? ›

You've heard it before, but we'll remind you again – drink water! Water helps flush those gross particles you've been breathing in from your system. In general, a good daily target is about ten glasses of water. However, if you're detoxing, try to increase this intake to 12 or 14 glasses.

How long does it take for lungs to recover from bad air quality? ›

If the air quality is especially poor, it may take a few days for your body to recover. And if you're regularly exposed to high levels of unhealthy air, the health consequences can linger for months or even years.

Is wildfire included in homeowners insurance? ›
